When you go abroad on holiday the idea of hiring a car and driving around can be somewhat daunting.

Three Vehicle Crash Leads to One Dead and Two Injured

On Saturday, December 12, a three vehicle crash resulted in the death of one person and two more injured.

According to the Alabama State Troopers the accident happened at 1.40 a.m. on Interstate 20 one mile east of Pell City. A 2010 Mercury Mariner being driven by 29 year old Terrance Leonard Hill of Pell City collided with a 2014 Freightliner being driven by 49 year old Sonny Jerome Sweeney, of Bradenton, Florida. Hill was not wearing a seat belt and he was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. Sweeney was uninjured.

Subsequently, the Mercury Mariner was struck by a 2015 Mack tractor trailer driven by 63 year old Allen Nichols, of Gainesville, Ga. Nichols was injured along with his passenger, 31 year old Dorron Ross Howard, of Birmingham. They were both taken by ambulance to UAB Hospital.

The crash is still under investigation.

Teenage Driver Accident Statistics

It makes very sad reading indeed that U.S. teenage drivers have the highest accident rate of any age group. The most comprehensive data relates to 2013 and confirms that approximately 963,000 drivers age 16 to 19 were involved in crashes reported to the police. These incidents resulted in 383,000 injuries and 2,865 deaths.

Video footage from 1,700 in-vehicle camera recorders has given researchers a unique opportunity to analyze the six seconds leading up to a crash of teen drivers. The footage showed that distraction was a contributing factor in 58 percent of all crashes which is a huge increase on the previously estimated figure of 14 percent. Passengers and cell phones are the most common forms of distraction that leads to accidents among teen drivers; with lack of experience behind the wheel another contributing factor.

Parents can play a vital role in educating their teens as to the dangers of being distracted while driving including cell phone usage and passengers. They could also consider restricting their teen to carrying only one non-family member passenger until they build up enough road experience to manage hazardous road conditions. Motorcyclist was Killed in Suspected Road Race

On Sunday afternoon, October 4 a motorcyclist was killed in a collision.

According to authorities the accident happened at approximately 2.40 p.m. at Jefferson Avenue Southwest in front of an A1 Service Station. Kaylan Kamonta Perry, aged 21 from Fairfield was riding his motorcycle when a Mercury sedan struck it causing him to crash in to a power pole outside Paul Piece Body Shop.

Authorities stated that having reviewed video footage and spoken to witnesses it appears that both parties were racing prior to the crash. There is also a possibility they had been fighting before the accident and likely both drivers knew each other. The two males in the truck fled the scene of the accident however, one individual was later taken into custody.

Witnesses spoke of how it looked like the motorcyclist was trying to jump of the motorcycle when he hit the pole and the impact caused the motorcycle to travel almost half a block. Police are continuing their investigations and frustrated relatives have called for further action following previous assaults in Perry, which they believe are linked to this incident.

Fairfield Woman Dies in Single Vehicle Crash

Early on Sunday morning, September 27, a Fairfield woman died in a single vehicle crash.

According to the Alabama State Troopers, the accident happened in the early morning at around 1 a.m. on the Interstate 65 in Cullman County at mile marker 299, two miles south of Dodge City. A 2007 Chevy Tahoe SUV being driven by 23 year old Gerald Tolbert of Birmingham left the roadway and then hit a culvert and overturned. His passenger, 26 year old Shequita Wallace, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene and another passenger, 23 year old Jasmine Woody of Birmingham was taken to a hospital in Huntsville with unknown injuries. She was also not wearing her seat belt. Tolbert was uninjured.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Alabama Man Indicted for Involuntary Manslaughter

On Tuesday, August 25, a federal grand jury indicted a man from Huntsville, Alabama for involuntary manslaughter.

According to officials, 24 year old Cedric Conrood was indicted following an accident on July 3 when he was driving a Chevrolet Tahoe SUV on the Natchez Trace Parkway at around 12.30 p.m. which crossed the center line near milepost 244.5 just north of the Davis Lake exit. He then hit a Honda CRV coming in the opposite direction. In the crash, 62 year old Steven Allen Foster of Broxton Mississippi was killed and pronounced dead at the scene and his wife, Mary Katherine Foster was injured and taken to the North Mississippi Medical Center (NMMC) in Tupelo.

Coonrod was also transported to NMMC along with the two passengers in his vehicle.

No trial date has yet been set for Conrood.

Fatal Accident in Mobile County

On Saturday afternoon, July 19 there was a fatal accident in Mobile County.

According to Alabama State Troopers, the accident happened around 12.45 p.m. on Celeste Road near Salco Road, five miles north of Saraland. Alton George Miller aged 63 and of Chunchula was driving a 2000 Toyota Corolla when he collided with a 2000 Ford F 150 being driven by 40 year old Anthony James Herbert of Citronelle.

It is not known what caused the collision and it is still under investigation.

Miller, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.

In Miller’s car was a passenger, 63 year old Clayton James Bradford of Mobile and he was also injured along with an 18 year old passenger. The state of their injuries is not known.

Herbert was also taken to the hospital for his injuries.
